Questions & Concerns

Umm… dancing?? Not so sure about that!
If you can walk, you can square dance! Some folks add extra flair, some keep it simple—but everyone gets smoother with practice. You’ll surprise yourself!

I square danced in grade school. Do I really need lessons?
Yep! Square dancing has different styles, and memories aren’t always as fresh as we think. But if it is the style you learned before, you’ll be the star of the class.

I used to dance but took a long break. Do I start at the beginning?
It depends! The class coordinator will help you find the right level. If enough returning dancers join, we may form a “fast track” review group to help everyone jump back in quickly.

Do I need a partner?
Nope! Bring one if you like—but if not, we’ll pair you up with friendly dancers in seconds.

Do I need to memorize choreography?
No memorizing routines! The caller tells you every move. You’ll learn calls one at a time, use them immediately, and review them at the next lesson. It feels like a lot at first, but suddenly—click!—you’ve got it.

How big of a commitment is this?
You choose your pace. Beginners usually complete CTM (Condensed Teaching Method) in about 13 weeks. After that, you can continue into Mainstream and then Plus if you want. Some dancers only take lessons, some only go to dances, and many happily enjoy both.

How many calls will I learn?
CTM teaches 56 calls, Mainstream adds 35, and Plus adds 30 more. Sounds huge, but you learn them gradually over months with tons of repetition and support.

What if I miss a week?
Totally okay—life happens! We’ll help you catch up. If you miss several weeks, it may be easier to join the next session.

Can I bring my kids?
Possibly! Middle schoolers and up usually do great if they want to be there and can partner with adults. Kids often learn faster than the grown-ups, so patience all around helps!

Do we only dance to country music?
Not at all! Square dancing uses pop, rock, Broadway, folk, Americana, classical, patriotic tunes, alternative, and yes—some country. The music variety surprises everyone!

What should I bring to class?
Comfortable clothes, good shoes (no flip-flops!), a water bottle, and a sense of humor. Everyone makes mistakes—you’ll laugh through them with the group.

Do I need special clothes?
Nope! Casual is perfect for classes and most club dances. Some dancers dress up, others don’t. Traditional attire is usually reserved for weekends, conventions, or special events—totally optional.

What does it cost?
Lessons are $8 each. Dances are $10 per person, often discounted for club members. Compared to many hobbies, it’s very affordable.

I’m nervous…
That’s normal! Most clubs let you try your first class free or offer a Fun Night so you can test-drive square dancing. Callers and experienced “angels” will guide you every step of the way.

What if I don’t know anyone?
You won’t be a stranger for long! Square dancers are famously friendly. You may even reconnect with someone you know—or make brand new friends who share your interests.

What if I need extra help?
Just ask! Callers and experienced dancers are always nearby and happy to walk you through anything.

Is the vocabulary confusing?
There’s some fun lingo, but you’ll catch on fast. It makes you feel like part of the dance world!

Is square dancing really that fun?   YES—absolutely!
Square dancing brings joy, connection, movement, laughter, and a mental challenge that feels great. After the pandemic pause, dancers everywhere said returning was pure happiness.
Come see for yourself!
